The sacred conclusion of the Margashirsha month takes place on the deeply divine date of Purnima. This date in the Sanatana tradition is not merely a full moon day but encompasses several great divine manifestations and festivals within itself. On this sacred date, Lord Dattatreya, the combined manifestation of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh who imparts wisdom to all three worlds, was born. Alongside this, to eliminate the severe crisis of food shortage hovering over creation, Mother Parvati assumed the divine form of Goddess Annapurna and offered alms to Lord Shiva in the city of Kashi. On this holy night, the Moon shines adorned with all sixteen divine digits in the Mrigashira Nakshatra, showering cool and ambrosial rays across the entire Earth.
According to sacred lore, to test the unwavering spiritual power of Maharshi Atri and his deeply chaste wife Mother Anasuya, the divine Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh arrived at their hermitage disguised as ascetics. The Trinity insisted that Mother Anasuya serve them alms without wearing any garments. Using her chastity and spiritual power, Mother Anasuya transformed all three deities into innocent infants and affectionately nursed them. When the consorts of the deities reached the hermitage searching for their husbands and sought forgiveness from Mother Anasuya, the Trinity pleased with her devotion granted a boon to be born from her womb as a unified incarnation. As a result of this boon, Lord Dattatreya manifested on Margashirsha Purnima as the unified form of the Trinity.
Another miraculous legendary story tied to this date is the manifestation of Goddess Annapurna. At a time when a terrible crisis of famine and hunger struck the Earth and humanity yearned for every drop of grain, Lord Shiva himself assumed the form of a mendicant in Kashi. For the welfare and hunger relief of all living beings, Mother Parvati took the form of Goddess Annapurna and offered divine grain into the begging bowl of Lord Shiva. Due to this compassionate incarnation of Goddess Annapurna, green fields and an abundance of food grains returned to the Earth. For this reason, Margashirsha Purnima is celebrated with immense devotion as Annapurna Jayanti.
In Vedic astrology, the date of Margashirsha Purnima is considered exceptionally rare for strengthening the Moon and purifying the mind. On this day, the Moon appears in its full form under the influence of the Mrigashira Nakshatra, which connects directly to seeker consciousness and mental stability. The cool rays emanating from the Moon on this holy night contain medicinal qualities that calm mental stress and physical ailments within individuals.
| Planet / Element | Spiritual Influence | Astrological Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Moon | Control over mind, emotions and water element | Mental peace, relief from depression and focus |
| Jupiter | Growth in wisdom, righteousness and intellect | Calming Jupiter afflictions and sharp intellect |
| Annapurna Principle | Stability of grain and food reserves in home | Destruction of poverty and freedom from domestic strife |
From an astrological perspective, if the Moon is weak in a horoscope or if the mind remains constantly anxious and clouded due to Rahu or Ketu, keeping the Margashirsha Purnima fast and offering raw milk water to the Moon proves immensely beneficial. The three day nectar bath performed during this period destroys physical, vocal and mental sins committed by the individual.
Bathing in a sacred river prior to sunrise on this holy date carries immense spiritual merit. If river bathing is not possible, add Ganges water to bathing water at home. Wear clean white or yellow attire after bathing and take a pledge for the fast while meditating on Lord Satyanarayan. Establish a wooden altar in the home sanctum and place the image or idol of Lord Vishnu and Lord Dattatreya reverently upon it.
