This extremely sacred date falling in the bright fortnight of the Margashirsha month paves the way for liberation by freeing human beings from the bonds of worldly attachment. Lord Krishna delivered the immortal message of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the holy soil of Kurukshetra on this very date. For this reason, this day is celebrated with immense devotion across the world as Gita Jayanti. In the grand temples of South India, this date is celebrated under the name of Vaikuntha Ekadashi where devotees pass through a special door built as a symbol of the abode of Lord Vishnu. The person who observes this holy fast alongside their ancestors receives permanent freedom from the torments of hellish realms.

What Is The Origin And Story Of Mokshada Ekadashi?

In ancient times, a deeply compassionate and religious king named Vaikhanasa ruled over a city named Gokul. The subjects in his kingdom were extremely happy and the chanting of Vedic hymns echoed everywhere. One night, King Vaikhanasa saw in a dream that his father was suffering immense pain in the realm of Yamaloka and was crying out to his son for liberation from hellish torments. As dawn broke, the king called the learned scholars and ascetics of his kingdom to seek a solution to this painful dream. The scholars advised the king to visit the hermitage of Sage Parvata who was a great knower of the past and the future.

King Vaikhanasa immediately reached the hermitage of Sage Parvata and asked for a remedy for the liberation of his father. Maharshi Parvata looked through his yogic vision and revealed that the father of the king had committed a serious sin in his previous life, as a result of which he was suffering in hell today. The king anxiously asked for a way to neutralize that sin. Then the sage instructed him to observe the fast of Mokshada Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Margashirsha month with complete rituals and offer its entire spiritual merit to his father. The king observed this fast with full devotion along with his family and donated the merit to his father, through which his father instantly attained salvation and departed for heaven.

What Is The Astrological And Vedic Importance Of Mokshada Ekadashi?

The month of Margashirsha is considered extremely sacred in Vedic astrology because Lord Krishna himself stated in the Gita that among the months, he is Margashirsha. A unique alignment of the Sun and the Moon occurs in this month, which inclines the mind of the seeker toward spiritual depths. The Ekadashi date has a direct connection with the human mind and its 11 senses, which include 5 sensory organs, 5 motor organs and 1 mind. Fasting on this day eliminates the negative influence of the Moon, making the mind controlled and steady.

Planet / Element Spiritual Influence Astrological Benefit
Moon Control over mind and emotions Mental peace and relief from stress
Sun Purification of soul and radiance Increase in willpower and prestige
Jupiter Growth in knowledge and righteousness Success in noble deeds and merit

According to Vedic astrology, worshipping Lord Damodara on this day removes the afflictions of Jupiter and Sun in the horoscope. If a person has Pitru Dosha in their birth chart due to which obstacles are arising in their life, observing the fast of this Ekadashi calms that affliction. Offering Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu destroys sins accumulated over lifetimes and infuses divine energy into the practitioner.
