Hanuman as the Guide Who Fulfilled Tulsidas’s Prayer and Led to the Highest Experience of Devotion

Devotion is not limited to chants, worship or listening to sacred stories. Its deepest state is the one in which an inner longing arises so intensely that it seeks direct realization of the beloved Lord. This longing may appear simple from outside, yet within it becomes a force powerful enough to transform an entire life. The story of Goswami Tulsidas Ji and Hanuman Ji belongs to that sacred longing, where Hanuman himself becomes the guide who fulfills the prayer of a devotee and leads devotion toward direct spiritual encounter.
The life of Tulsidas Ji is regarded as a shining example of love, faith and surrender toward Shri Ram. For him, Ram nam was not merely a chant but something as essential as breath. Ram was present in his words, in his remembrance and in his contemplation. Yet within him remained an unfulfilled call that continued to stir him from within. He did not wish to remain satisfied only as a singer or writer of Ram’s story. Deep in his heart was an intense desire to behold the Lord directly, the very Lord whom he had already enshrined within.
This desire was not ordinary curiosity. It was the cry of a devotee who wished not merely to hear of the Lord but to see him. Tulsidas Ji’s mind had become so absorbed in this feeling that without direct vision of the Lord, devotion itself seemed incomplete. That is why his spiritual practice did not remain limited to outer observances. Gradually it turned into such deep yearning that his whole being became filled with Ram.
Some features of this longing may be understood in the following way:
• The desire to move beyond the name into direct vision
• Depth and continuity in devotion
• A pure inner call toward the beloved Lord
• A spiritual practice not satisfied with words alone
This was the stage where his prayer ceased to be a mental wish and became the voice of the soul.
When the call of a devotee is true, the path begins to open. This deep yearning of Tulsidas Ji eventually led him to Hanuman Ji. It is said that one day a wondrous event took place. Hanuman Ji appeared before him in a simple form. This appearance was not merely for assistance but also to reveal how important the role of a guide is in the journey of devotion.
Hanuman Ji understood the inner state of Tulsidas Ji. He knew that this was not an emotional desire alone but a genuine thirst for realization. therefore he indicated that if Tulsidas Ji truly wished to behold Ram, he would need to go to a particular place.
Hanuman Ji told Tulsidas Ji that at the ghats of Chitrakoot, amidst the gathering of saints, he would behold Shri Ram. This was not merely geographical guidance. It was a spiritual direction. Chitrakoot itself is associated with Ram bhakti, austerity, forest life and divine remembrance. Going there was not only an outer journey but an inner movement into the next stage of realization.
This indication carries a deep meaning:
| State | Meaning |
|---|---|
| The devotee’s longing | Worthiness for darshan was forming |
| Hanuman’s guidance | Spiritual practice was receiving direction |
| The call of Chitrakoot | The doorway to realization was opening |
Here one of the most important truths of the story becomes clear. Desire alone is not enough. Right direction is also necessary.
Tulsidas Ji followed Hanuman Ji’s instruction without doubt. He did not ask how, when or in what manner the darshan would happen. For him, it was enough that the guidance had come from Hanuman Ji. He reached Chitrakoot, where a gathering of saints had assembled. The atmosphere there was filled with peace, sacredness and devotion. It seemed as if the unseen sound of Ram’s name was flowing through every direction.
The scene at Chitrakoot was not only of an outer crowd. It was a union of discipline, sainthood and divine expectancy. In such an atmosphere, the mind of Tulsidas Ji became even more concentrated and devotional. He knew that something extraordinary was about to unfold, yet the inner vision needed to recognize it had not fully awakened.
Within that gathering, Tulsidas Ji saw two divine persons. They appeared in ordinary form, yet there was a radiance in their presence that made them distinct from all others. Even then, Tulsidas Ji could not recognize them in that moment. This is the most moving point of the story. Many times the divine stands before us, yet the inner sight required to recognize it is still incomplete.
The meaning of this moment is profound. Darshan does not happen through the eyes alone. If it did, Tulsidas Ji would have understood everything at once. True darshan requires not only visible presence but also awakened inner consciousness that can recognize truth.
Later, Hanuman Ji told Tulsidas Ji that those two very persons were Shri Ram and Lakshman. The moment he heard this, a deep flood of emotion arose within him. The truth he had been searching for over so many years had stood before him, yet slipped past his recognition. There was pain in this but there was also grace. Pain because recognition had not happened and grace because he received the opportunity to understand that devotion needs not only presence but also the worthiness to recognize.
Hanuman Ji did not merely provide information here. He imparted a great spiritual teaching that in order to reach the Lord, an outer journey alone is not enough. The inner eye must also awaken.
This incident did not remain a passing episode for Tulsidas Ji. It became a point of inner transformation in his life. His devotion became more mature. The understanding deepened within him that the longing to behold the Lord is essential but equally essential is the creation of an inner vision capable of recognizing the Lord.
This experience later gave his life a new direction. It is said that this was the very inner foundation that inspired him to compose the great text Ramcharitmanas. That composition was not merely literature. It was the stream of a devotee’s heart, one who had inwardly experienced longing for Ram, grace and the power of spiritual guidance.
In this episode, Hanuman Ji is not merely a helper. He appears in the form of a guru who leads the devotee to the beloved Lord. The work of a guru is not only to give knowledge but also to direct the devotee’s longing toward its true destination. Hanuman Ji did exactly that.
He performed three essential acts for Tulsidas Ji:
• He understood his longing
• He gave direction to his devotion
• He granted the vision needed to recognize truth
That is why Hanuman Ji appears here not only as a devotee of Ram but as a bridge between the devotee and the Lord.
This story makes it clear that longing alone is not enough. Longing is necessary but along with it one also needs worthiness, guidance and inner vision. Tulsidas Ji had longing, he had worthiness and when guidance came at the right time, his spiritual journey moved to the next level.
The story also shows the following truths:
• Devotion without guidance may wander
• Guidance without devotion may remain incomplete
• Darshan without recognition does not become whole
• The divine sees both grace and the readiness of the seeker
This episode is not only the story of Tulsidas Ji. It is the symbol of every journey in which a person seeks God, truth or the highest purpose of life. Many times a person carries deep longing within, yet lacks direction. At such a moment, some Hanuman like guide enters life and offers the right place, the right time and the right vision to the seeker.
This story offers several deep inspirations for life:
• Do not let devotion or spiritual practice remain merely formal
• Recognize the truth of your inner call
• When guidance comes, respond with faith rather than doubt
• Learn not only to see truth but to recognize it
• Humility and patience are both essential in the attainment of the divine
The final message of this story is deeply tender and profound. Hanuman Ji teaches that if devotion is true, it ultimately reaches its destination. Yet on that path a bridge is needed and Hanuman becomes that bridge. He does not merely console the devotee, he leads the devotee to the beloved Lord.
That is why Hanuman Ji is not regarded only as the deity of strength, service and courage but also as the one who unites the devotee with the Lord. When that union happens, devotion no longer remains a feeling. It becomes direct realization.
