Learn the rituals, remedies and date of Anant Chaturdashi for Ganpati Visarjan
In 2025, Ganesh Chaturthi began on Wednesday, 27 August, during the Shukla Chaturthi of Bhadrapada month. The festival, celebrated over ten days, will conclude with the immersion of Lord Ganesh idols on Saturday, 6 September 2025 - the sacred occasion of Anant Chaturdashi.
The immersion ritual is not merely a farewell. It is a deeply spiritual act that represents detachment and the transient nature of existence. Devotees believe that Lord Ganesh returns to Mount Kailash after Visarjan, blessing them with renewed prosperity and inner peace.
Ganesh's arrival each year symbolizes joy, knowledge and auspicious beginnings. however his departure through Visarjan reflects a higher philosophical truth. It teaches us that everything in life is temporary. With folded hands and deep gratitude, devotees release the divine form into water - an act of spiritual humility and trust.
Performing specific acts during Visarjan is believed to invite blessings and strengthen Mercury (Budh) in one’s horoscope. A balanced Budh improves intellect, communication and business success.
Offering red flowers throughout the festival brings inner calm and spiritual alignment. It is considered a form of devotion in motion.
Before the final farewell, tie four coconuts in a string and offer them. This act is said to remove obstacles and bring success in tasks that are stuck or delayed.
Feeding an elephant during Ganesh Utsav or on Visarjan day is a highly auspicious act. It is believed to dissolve personal challenges and bring divine grace.
On the day of immersion, tie seven knots in a raw silk thread while chanting “Jai Ganesh Kato Kalesh.” Carry this thread during new beginnings for enhanced success.
Not every devotee waits for the tenth day. Many families opt for immersions after one and a half, three, five or seven days. Anant Chaturdashi, however remains the most spiritually aligned day - associated with the eternal or “Ananta,” that accepts all into itself.
As Lord Ganesh is immersed, devotees often shed tears, not from sorrow but from the beauty of surrender. The clay idol returns to the water and becomes one with nature again. It is a reminder of the eternal cycle of birth, existence and dissolution - echoing the timeless Vedic philosophy.
