Spiritual Meaning of Nag Dev Worship and Protection of Family

In the holy month of Shravan, Nag Panchami is not regarded only as a festival of snake worship. It is also seen as a celebration of the sacred affection between brother and sister, the purity of promise and the protective grace of Nag Dev. On this day women consider the serpent deity as brother, worship him and pray for protection, happiness and prosperity of their families.
According to old traditions a very ancient story is linked with Nag Panchami in which a serpent becomes the dharmic brother of a woman, protects her life and grants her honour and wealth. This story helps to understand the inner feeling behind the fast and worship of Nag Panchami even today.
On Nag Panchami people draw images of serpents on walls, doors or in the courtyard or they worship the image or idol of Nag Dev by offering milk, turmeric, vermillion and flowers. It is believed that worshipping the serpent as brother on this day removes fear of snakes, prevents untimely death and protects from sudden calamities.
Nag Dev is associated with the depths of the earth, water sources and subtle hidden realms. Therefore the Nag Panchami story is not only about serpents and wealth. It also teaches the importance of promise, trust and righteous conduct.

In ancient times there lived a rich merchant who had seven sons and all were married. The wife of the youngest son was of very good character, learned and gentle but she had one lack. She had never had a brother of her own.
One day the eldest daughter in law said that the house had to be plastered and for this yellow clay was needed. She called all the daughters in law to go with her. Everyone took spades and tools and began digging the earth to collect the clay. While digging, suddenly a serpent appeared from under the soil. The eldest daughter in law became frightened and started striking the serpent with her tool.
The youngest daughter in law felt compassion in her heart. She stopped the elder and said that the snake should not be killed because it was innocent and they were only destroying its home. It had done no harm to them. Hearing her words, the elder stopped beating the snake. The serpent quietly moved to one side and sat there.
Then the youngest daughter in law said to the serpent that they would return home with the clay and asked it not to leave the place. Saying this they all went back to the house. In the daily household chores the youngest forgot the promise she had made to the serpent.
The next day when the youngest daughter in law remembered this incident she at once went back to that spot along with others. She saw that the serpent was still sitting at the same place. On seeing him the words came naturally from her mouth, Serpent brother, salutations.
The serpent replied that since she had called him brother he would spare her. Otherwise one who makes a promise and forgets it must bear the result of falsehood and deserves a bite. The youngest felt ashamed and said, brother it was my mistake, please forgive me.
The serpent’s heart softened. He said that from that day she would be his sister and he her brother and that she could ask for any gift she desired. The youngest became emotional and said that she had no one of her own and that it was a blessing for her that he had accepted her as brother.
After some time the same serpent took the form of a man and came to the merchant’s house. He asked that his sister be sent with him. The family members were surprised and said that she had no brother. The man replied that he was a distant relative and had gone away in childhood. Now he had returned. After he convinced them, they sent the youngest daughter in law with him.
On the way he revealed the truth that he was the same serpent whom she had saved. He told her not to be afraid and said that wherever she found it difficult to walk she could hold his tail. She did as instructed and in this way reached his abode, which looked like a divine serpent realm.
When the youngest daughter in law saw the grandeur of her serpent brother’s house she was astonished. There were huge quantities of gold, silver, jewels and wealth. The mother of the serpent welcomed her with affection. After some time one day the mother said that she needed to go out on some work and asked her to give cold milk to her brother while she was away.
The youngest daughter in law forgot this instruction and gave hot milk by mistake. On drinking it the mouth of the serpent burned badly. Seeing this, the mother became very angry and felt that the young woman had done this intentionally.
The serpent then calmed his mother and explained that it was only a mistake. He protected the intention of his sister and pacified the mother’s anger. Afterwards he said that it was time to send his sister back to her in laws.
At the time of her departure the serpent and his father gave her a large amount of gold, silver, jewels and fine clothes and ornaments. When the youngest daughter in law returned to her home with all this wealth everyone was amazed.
The elder daughter in law felt great envy on seeing so much wealth with the youngest. She thought that since the brother was so rich the younger should bring even more wealth from him. When the serpent brother heard this he sent more articles made of gold and silver.
Still the elder said that if there were so many golden things, then even the broom should be of gold. Hearing this, the serpent sent a golden broom as well.
At that time the serpent brother had given the younger daughter in law a wonderful necklace studded with gemstones. Its beauty became famous all over the town and even the queen of that kingdom heard about it. She said to the king that the necklace of the merchant’s younger daughter in law must be brought to the palace.
The king ordered his minister to fetch the necklace at once. The minister went to the merchant’s house and said that the queen wanted to wear the necklace of the younger daughter in law and that it must be handed over. The merchant, afraid of the king, asked the younger to give the necklace and sent it to the palace.
The youngest daughter in law was deeply saddened by this. She remembered her serpent brother and requested him to do something so that as long as the necklace remained around the queen’s neck it would become a serpent and only when it was returned to her it would again become studded with gems. The serpent brother accepted her request.
As soon as the queen wore the necklace, it turned into a serpent and coiled around her neck. The queen screamed with fear and began to cry. The entire court was thrown into confusion.
The king immediately sent word to the merchant and ordered him to bring the younger daughter in law without delay. The merchant became anxious, fearing that the king might punish them. He himself took her to the court.
The king asked her what sorcery she had done and threatened punishment if she did not tell the truth. The youngest humbly replied that the necklace itself was unusual. When it was around her neck it remained adorned with jewels whereas around others it took the form of a serpent.
The king doubted her words. He returned the necklace and told her to wear it in front of everyone. As soon as she wore it, the necklace again became bright with jewels. Seeing this the king was convinced.
He became pleased and gave her many coins and gifts and also returned the necklace. The youngest came back home with the necklace and the wealth.
When she returned with so much wealth, once again the elder daughter in law was overcome with jealousy. She misled the husband of the youngest and suggested that the money must have come from some wrong source.
On hearing this the youngest daughter in law’s husband too became suspicious. He called his wife and demanded to know from where she had received so much wealth. She felt hurt yet full of faith. She remembered her serpent brother.
Immediately the serpent appeared there. He told the husband that if he doubted the character and conduct of his dharmic sister he would bite him. Hearing this the husband became afraid and at the same time relieved, because he now knew the truth.
He honoured the serpent deity and asked forgiveness for his mistake. From that day peace and trust returned to the house.
On the basis of this incident it is believed that the festival of Nag Panchami began to be celebrated from that very day. Women observe a fast, worship the serpent deity as brother, offer milk and prayers and ask for his blessings for protection of family, children and marital fortune.
This ancient story is not only about miracles or wealth. It symbolises the strength of promise, compassion and trust. The youngest daughter in law saved the serpent out of pity without expecting anything. The serpent accepted this as a dharmic bond and became her brother, protecting her in every difficulty.
The story also shows that jealousy and greed lead a person towards fear and humiliation, whereas truth, simplicity and devotion bring respect and protection. If one understands these inner feelings while worshipping Nag Dev on Nag Panchami, the experience of real protection and grace in life deepens.
