The legend of Lord Ganesha and Tulsi Devi and its deep symbolic meaning
Ganesh Chaturthi is more than a festival of devotion and joy. It is also a reminder of sacred tales that shape traditions. One such legend is the story of the encounter between Tulsi Devi and Lord Ganesha. This legend explains why Tulsi leaves are not offered to Ganesha even though they are holy in the worship of other deities.
According to the Shiva Purana, young Ganesha was once immersed in meditation on the banks of the holy river Ganga. Tulsi Devi, regarded as the goddess of purity and devotion, happened to pass by. The radiance of Ganesha captivated her. She felt a deep desire to marry him.
Tulsi proposed marriage to Ganesha. At that time, Ganesha was devoted to meditation, discipline and celibacy. He refused her request politely but firmly. His path was one of meditation and duty, not of marriage.
Tulsi felt humiliated by this rejection and her heart was filled with anger.
In her fury, Tulsi cursed Ganesha that he would marry not once but twice. Ganesha in return pronounced his own curse. He said Tulsi would marry the demon Shankhachuda and later be revered only as a sacred plant.
From that day, Tulsi leaves have been forbidden in Ganesha’s worship.
This event is not limited to a divine curse. It holds spiritual symbolism.
Table: Symbolic meaning
Character | Representation |
---|---|
Tulsi | Material desires and attachments |
Ganesha | Detachment and wisdom |
The curse | True devotion requires freedom from worldly bonds |
As the legend affirms, Ganesha later married Siddhi and Buddhi. From these unions, two sons were born, Shubh and Labh. In this way Tulsi’s prophecy came true but Ganesha’s integrity as a spiritual guide remained intact.
This is why Tulsi is revered in the worship of Vishnu and Krishna but never placed before Lord Ganesha.
This old legend continues to inspire seekers even today. It reminds us that spiritual progress requires detachment from unchecked desires.
