A unique story of arrogance, simplicity and true devotion
The scriptures of India are filled with tales that weave together humor, devotion and profound lessons. These stories are not meant only for entertainment but to guide human life. One such tale is that of Ganesha and Kubera, which reveals that real wealth does not lie in material riches but in humility, devotion and sincerity.
Kubera, the treasurer of the gods, ruled the fabled city of Alakapuri. His halls glittered with mountains of gold, precious gems and divine treasures. Yet with his prosperity grew arrogance. Eager to boast of his wealth, Kubera invited Shiva and Parvati to a magnificent feast. Perceiving his pride, the divine couple declined and sent young Ganesha instead. This choice marked the beginning of a memorable lesson.
Chubby and cheerful, little Ganesha arrived at Kubera’s palace. Kubera assumed that feeding a child would be a simple task. Golden halls brimmed with delicacies: laddoos, sweets and exotic dishes prepared in plenty. But as Ganesha began to eat, Kubera realized that his guest’s hunger was extraordinary. Plate after plate vanished, yet the boy dem and ed more.
In no time, Ganesha consumed the entire stock of food prepared in the palace kitchens. The cooks were bewildered but his appetite only grew sharper. Soon he began devouring the furniture, decorations and ornaments of the palace. At last, he threatened to swallow Kubera himself if more food was not provided. The mighty lord of wealth, surrounded by riches, stood powerless before a divine child’s hunger.
Humbled and terrified, Kubera rushed to Mount Kailash. There he fell at the feet of Shiva and Parvati, admitting his fault. He confessed that his arrogance was meaningless and that his wealth held no power against divine will. With compassion, Parvati h and ed him a simple bowl of roasted rice (poha) and instructed him to offer it with humility to Ganesha.
Kubera returned, trembling yet sincere and offered the rice to Ganesha with folded h and s. To his amazement, the boy’s hunger was instantly satisfied. What riches could not achieve, a humble bowl of rice accomplished. The lesson was clear: gr and eur without devotion is futile but simplicity offered with a pure heart pleases the divine.
This charming tale holds timeless lessons for every age:
