Sri Krishna and the Law of Karma: Gita Secrets Revealed

Table of Contents

When we look at the entire earthly incarnation and the sacred life character of Lord Sri Krishna, we see the darshan of His infinite compassion at every single step. He lifted the Govardhan hill on His pinky finger to protect the residents of Gokul, subdued the serpent Kaliya to make the Yamuna river free from poison, guided Arjuna who was surrounded by grief on the battlefield of Kurukshetra and protected the honor of Draupadi in the hour of crisis when she called Him in the full assembly. Even after this, a very significant question has always arisen in human history and Sanatan thought as to why, if Sri Krishna is all-powerful and supremely compassionate, He did not save everyone from pain and death in the Mahabharata war. Why did He not make all living beings of the world free from miseries and sufferings? The answer to this deep mystery is found not by doubting His power but by understanding that deep relationship and eternal laws between the jivatma and Paramatma about which our Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavata Purana describe in detail. According to Vedic astrology and spiritual science, Sri Krishna does not interfere in the law of karma of anyone nor in their free will because supreme liberation is never forced upon anyone but it is embraced through the awakening of the soul.

Special Scriptural Rules Of Divine Justice And Karma Principle

According to Vedic tradition, the operation of the universe is not accidental but it is completely based on the ensured rules of time, karma and the positioning of the planets. Lord Sri Krishna, despite being the lord of this entire universe, never breaks the boundary of these moral and natural laws.

State of Life Perspective of Jivatma Vedic Rule of Sri Krishna Astrological Significator Planet Spiritual Result
Intense Suffering and Crisis Blaming only external circumstances Mandatory consumption of fruits of actions Lord Shani and Rahu Purification of soul and awakening of wisdom
Absence of Surrender Remaining drowned in material pleasures and ego Attainment of fruits as per the intent held Sun and Jupiter Remaining continuously trapped in worldly bonds
Misuse of Free Will Choosing the path of unrighteousness and lust God remains only in the witness consciousness Venus and Mars Self-destruction and future bondage of karma
State of Complete Surrender Maintaining equanimity in pleasure and pain Divine promise of Yogakshemam Vahamyaham Moon and Ketu Attainment of moksha and union with God

Flow Of Divine Grace Only In Proportion To Surrender

In the eleventh verse of the fourth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Sri Krishna declares a highly important and irrefutable principle.

Ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamyaham Mama vartmanuvartante manusyah partha sarvasah

The straight and clear meaning of this shloka is that in whatever way human beings surrender unto Me, I reward them accordingly, because O Arjuna, all human beings follow My path in all respects. This divine वचन reveals that the flow of the grace of God never stops for anyone but its experience occurs to a human being only in proportion to their surrender. Sri Krishna never forces His own will upon any living being but He respects the internal call of the human being.

  • The person who demands only material pleasures and wealth from Him, He grants them the same.
  • The seeker who desires freedom from the bonds of the world and moksha, He opens the path of knowledge for them.
  • The devotee who rises above all this and longs only for Sri Krishna, He places Himself under the control of that devotee.

The Supreme Supremacy Of The Unalterable Law Of Karma

This entire universe is not run by any chaos but its foundation has been placed upon the unbroken principles of dharma and karma. Lord Sri Krishna, despite being the master of the entire world, never reduces the boundary of this eternal law of karma. After the conclusion of the Mahabharata war, when Gandhari cursed Sri Krishna being aggrieved by the destruction of her hundred sons, He accepted it remaining exceptionally calm. He reminded Gandhari that every living being has to consume the fruits of the karma of their past births and the end of her sons was merely the result of their own unrighteous actions.

If Sri Krishna were to wipe away the consequences of the bad actions of every person of the world immediately with His magical power, the entire meaning of this life would disappear and making spiritual progress for the jivatma would become completely impossible. In astrology, Lord Shani is considered the giver of the fruits of actions, who provides justice to every living being according to their karma and Sri Krishna is the supreme witness of this arrangement. Karma is not a punishment but it is a supreme teacher that reforms the soul, through whose experiences an individual develops detachment and self-knowledge.

The Outstanding Gift Of Free Will

The greatest and invaluable gift given by God to the jivatma is their free will, that is, the freedom to choose. In our Upanishads, the jivatma has been described as eternal, ever-conscious and endowed with the freedom to perform actions according to their own will. Lord Sri Krishna never snatches this freedom away from any living being, nor does He compel anyone to perform His devotion. In the sixty-third verse of the eighteenth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, after explaining the essence of the entire Gita, Sri Krishna tells Arjuna that I have explained this highly confidential knowledge to you, now deliberate on it deeply and then do as you wish.

Standing at the edge of that terrible war of Kurukshetra, Sri Krishna did not force Arjuna to fight. He removed the doubts of Arjuna, showed him the path of truth but left the final decision completely to the wisdom of Arjuna. Real love and devotion possess value only when chosen with complete freedom rather than under any pressure. If God were to make everyone His puppet and force them onto the correct path, the evolution of human consciousness would stop completely.

The Leela Of Transformation Instead Of Mere Protection

Every leela of the life of Lord Sri Krishna does not teach human beings to run away from worldly miseries but inspires them to achieve self-transformation while remaining amidst those challenges. When He lifted the Govardhan hill to protect Gokul from the anger of Indra, His purpose was not merely protection from rain but to shatter the false ego of King Indra and to eliminate the blind ritualistic dogmatism of the residents of Gokul to connect them directly with the Supreme Divinity.

  • Permitting the Mahabharata war was not to praise destruction but to establish dharma in society by destroying unrighteousness.
  • Sri Krishna protects only at that place where protection awakens the sleeping consciousness of a human being.
  • He allows those circumstances to arrive in life that shake a human being from within to make them free from lust.

If He were to save every human being from every crisis without any effort and without any reason, He would deprive human beings of that deep spiritual experience and self-realization which is obtained only after heating oneself in the furnace of struggles.

Moksha Is A Living Relationship Not A Command

According to the Bhagavata Purana, the greatest gift given by Sri Krishna to His devotees is not immediate freedom from miseries but that unbroken relationship of love and devotion that is beyond the boundaries of time. He does not rule by giving commands like a king but He accepts becoming bound in the thread of love of His devotees. He becomes bound by the love rope of Mother Yashoda, runs immediately at the aggrieved call of Draupadi and becomes controlled by the tears of the gopis.

This context reveals the greatest mystery of God, that Sri Krishna does not require helpless and destitute slaves but He waits for loving friends and companions. He does not completely erase all difficulties from the life of His devotees but He Himself stands with the devotee amidst those difficulties. Becoming the charioteer of Arjuna, He suffers the entire stress of the war Himself, due to which every misery of the life of the devotee becomes a sacred path to reach the Supreme Divinity.

The Truth Of Supreme Compassion Respecting Freedom

After this entire deliberation, it becomes clear why Sri Krishna does not save everyone because real moksha is not running away from the world but becoming completely awake to the truth. He has already provided His knowledge, His compassion and wisdom to human beings. The door of the house of God always remains open but the decision to enter inside that door has to be taken by each jivatma themselves with their own free will. This is not a limitation of any power of God but it is the supreme climax of His love that He never makes us His puppet, nor does He snatch away from us the essential lessons received through our karma.

He merely waits for us with extreme patience like a guide and the moment any heart turns towards Him with full fidelity, He holds their hand. His greatest mercy is that moksha is not a collective governmental decree but it is an exceptionally personal, confidential and sweet journey of each soul with Sri Krishna where ultimately every living being discovers Him not merely as the master of the universe but as the supreme beloved of their inner soul.

FAQ

If Sri Krishna was all-powerful, why did He not stop the Mahabharata war?
Sri Krishna made every possible effort to avoid the war by becoming a peace messenger and visiting the assembly of the Kauravas. however when Duryodhana misused his ego and free will to refuse even an inch of land equal to the needle's point, letting the war happen was the only choice left to establish justice and dharma in society.

Can the destiny and karma of an individual be changed by the grace of Sri Krishna?
Yes, when a jivatma completely renounces ego and surrenders at the feet of Sri Krishna, the bad effects of accumulated karma become extremely weak through His infinite grace. According to astrology as well, complete surrender completely pacifies the negativity of the planets.

What is the root cause of miseries according to Sri Krishna and how can it be avoided?
According to Sri Krishna, the root cause of miseries is considering oneself as the body, maintaining excessive attachment towards the transient objects of the world and worrying about the fruits of actions. The only remedy to avoid this is to follow desireless Karma Yoga and accept every circumstance as the decree of God.

Why does Sri Krishna not come immediately to save us in times of crisis like Draupadi and Gajendra?
Sri Krishna always resides exceptionally close to us but as long as a human being relies on the ego of their wealth, strength or intellect, His hidden grace does not manifest. The moment a human being abandons the shelter of the world like Draupadi and calls only Him, He appears immediately for assistance.

Does free will mean that a human being is free to perform any sinful action as per their own choice?
Free will means the freedom to perform action but the freedom to escape the fruit of action is possessed by no one. Whatever sinful or pious action a human being chooses, they must consume its fruit according to the laws of nature and this is the unalterable justice of God.
