Know the deep secrets of Narayana's Yoganidra and time

In the divine artwork ancient sculpture and mythological narratives of Sanatana Dharma an extremely specific calm and familiar form of Bhagavan Vishnu is always visible. He is reclining in an extremely peaceful posture on the comfortable bedding of Sheshanaga the terrifying serpent with a thousand hoods right in the middle of the primordial infinite Kshirasagara. Towards his feet Goddess Lakshmi the goddess of wealth and opulence is seated serving his feet with a desireless mind. At this very time from the navel lotus of Narayana the physical creator of the universe Lord Brahma is emerging holding the four Vedas in his hands. Upon seeing this supernatural scene for the first time it is natural for a question to arise in the mind of any ordinary human being as to why the sustainer of the entire universe and the controller of infinite galaxies chooses an extremely venomous scary and terrifying serpent as his seat? This thought might put anyone into deep surprise that when the creation and operation of the entire universe is taking place why does saaksat God appear absorbed in Yoganidra as its main foundation?
The description of this pious form is found in great detail in the Vishnu Purana Srimad Bhagavatam Harivamsa Purana and many Vedic Samhitas. In reality this form of Narayana is not just a mythological story an ancient folklore or an imaginary artwork. Behind it lie extremely practical truths of human life modern cosmic science movements of time and high spiritual mysteries. This form teaches us how to attain internal peace while living amidst the terrible horrors and anxieties of this restless world. This article uncovers the deep secrets of that supreme consciousness of Narayana which teaches us the highest art of living life in this mortal world through the bedding of Sheshanaga and the sattvic Kshirasagara.
According to Vedic texts each part ornaments and background of this specific form of Bhagavan Vishnu represents a special element of creation the state of the human mind and the time cycle which can be clearly understood through the following table.

|---|---|---|

| Yoganidra | Meditative and smiling reclining posture of Bhagavan Vishnu | Alert consciousness, mental stability, complete self-control and witness bhava |
| Goddess Lakshmi | Mahalakshmi continuously serving at the feet of Narayana | Dedication towards duty and worldly opulence being surrendered at the feet of God |

The place where Bhagavan Vishnu reclines is called Kshirasagara meaning the ocean of milk. Milk has been considered the ultimate symbol of sattva purity nourishment and health in the Sanatana tradition. On the spiritual plane this Kshirasagara represents that pure clean and calm mind within a human being which does not have any kind of worldly defect greed attachment or malice. When the mind of a person becomes completely pure and sattvic then saaksat Narayana resides within him. This ocean gives a realization of that eternal happiness and peace which can be obtained away from the useless rush of the world only by going into the refuge of God.
But right in the middle of this extremely peaceful clean and holy Kshirasagara a terrifying fierce and extremely venomous serpent Sheshanaga is present upon whom Bhagavan reclines. A serpent is generally considered a symbol of fear time venom uncertainty and worldly difficulties in human life. The hidden secret meaning of this supernatural scene is that our physical world is also exactly of this nature. Here on one side is the Kshirasagara of happiness contentment and sattva while on the other side there is also the terrible fear of problems anxieties diseases and death in the form of a serpent ready to bite every moment. The reclining of Bhagavan Vishnu with an extremely smiling countenance amidst both of these opposite situations teaches us that a human being should not get distracted even while living amidst the terrible adversities struggles and sorrows of life but should always maintain his internal spiritual peace.
A common perception is that Bhagavan Vishnu is sleeping on Sheshanaga but in reality he is not sleeping but he is in the state of Yoganidra. Yoganidra is not the sleep of ignorance like that of ordinary human beings where a person gets completely disconnected from the outside world sees dreams and becomes completely unconscious. Yoganidra means that supreme state of alertness and meditation where the physical body is resting completely but the internal consciousness is completely awake active and enlightened. When Narayana is in Yoganidra he is viewing every subtle activity of the entire universe through his internal vision and making mental blueprints for the creation of new universes. This state teaches how to remain completely active from within while being calm from outside.
Additionally the serpent on which he reclines is also called Shesha. Shesha means that which remains at the end even after everything ends. When the time of cataclysm arrives and the entire universe planets constellations are destroyed even then the power that does not get destroyed and remains is called Sheshanaga therefore it is also called Ananta. This is the direct symbol of saaksat Kala meaning time. Bhagavan Vishnu being seated completely carefree on top of this Sheshanaga proves that he is not a slave of time but he is the supreme master of time itself. The infinite movements of time past future present and the cycle of Kala operate under his command alone. The human being who goes into the refuge of Narayana also rises above this cycle of time and attains immortality.
From the perspective of tantric science and high spiritual science Sheshanaga directly represents the Kundalini energy located within the human body. In the human body this divine energy resides in a sleeping state like a serpent taking three and a half coils at the lowest part of the spine which is called the Muladhara chakra. When a seeker awakens this Kundalini energy through meditation pranayama and yoga it rises upward and reaches the Sahasrara chakra where the light of knowledge bursts in the form of a thousand hoods. Bhagavan Vishnu sitting on the seat of a serpent with a thousand hoods shows that he has attained complete control over his entire energy senses and internal powers. This is the state of self-realization and supreme spiritual awakening.
Along with this this divine form presents a great ideal for all the household human beings of the world. Bhagavan Vishnu is considered the sustainer of this creation which means that he fulfills all worldly arrangements responsibilities and family obligations completely. At his feet sits Goddess Lakshmi who is the goddess of wealth opulence and prosperity. This scene teaches us the invaluable lesson that living a household life and consuming wealth grandeur and opulence is not a sin but a person should never become a slave of wealth. Wealth and opulence should always be under the control of a person and at his feet not riding on his head. When a human being performs his duties with a desireless mind being detached his life also becomes blissful like the Kshirasagara.
In this icon of Bhagavan Vishnu a long stalk of a lotus is seen emerging from his navel upon which the four-faced Lord Brahma is seated. The navel is considered the main energy center of the human body which is called the Manipura chakra in Vedic science. This navel place alone is the center of origin of entire life just as a child receives all its nourishment breaths and life in the womb of its mother through the navel alone.
The emergence of the lotus from the navel of Narayana displays that the origin of the entire visible and invisible world has taken place from within Vishnu alone. Lord Brahma who is the physical creator of this universe is also completely dependent on Narayana for his creative power. This entire visible world is in reality a mental extension of Bhagavan Vishnu himself. As long as he remains in Yoganidra this creation keeps operating and when he opens his eyes completely the dissolution of creation takes place. Therefore this form explains to us that every situation of this world is perishable and the absolute truth is only that one God who is sitting extremely peaceful stable and blissful behind this restless universe.
Why is the ocean of Bhagavan Vishnu called 'Kshirasagara'?
Kshirasagara means the ocean of milk, which is a symbol of supreme sattva, purity, mental peace and divine nourishment. This place shows that God resides only in that mind which is completely pure, निर्मल and free from defects.
Why is Sheshanaga called 'Ananta' and what does it mean?
Shesha means 'that which remains'. At the time of great cataclysm when the entire universe is destroyed, the power that still remains is called Sheshanaga. This displays the infinity of time and the time cycle, over which Bhagavan Vishnu has complete control.
How is the 'Yoganidra' of Bhagavan Vishnu different from ordinary sleep?
Yoganidra is not an unconscious sleep but it is that state of supreme consciousness and alertness where the body rests completely but the mind and soul stay awake to operate and create the activities of the entire universe.
What does the scene of Kshirasagara teach us about our practical life?
This scene teaches us that on one side in life is the ocean of milk of happiness, while on the other side there is also the venomous serpent form of problems and anxieties. A human being should not get distracted while living between these two and should fulfill his duties calmly with a smile.
What is the secret of Lord Brahma sitting on the lotus emerging from the navel of the Lord?
The navel is the main life center of the body (Manipura chakra). The emergence of the lotus from the navel of Narayana and Brahma being upon it displays that the original source of origin of the entire creation is Bhagavan Vishnu himself and Lord Brahma creates through him alone.
