In the supreme sacred beliefs and ancient texts of Sanatana Dharma the River Ganga flowing in the form of a river is not considered just a physical stream of water. She is considered the living provider of salvation meaning moksha purification and ultimate redemption. This saga of Ganga leaving the absolute bliss of heaven and coming to the dust of the earth to become the purifier of the fallen is completely supernatural astonishing and filled with mysteries. In the Shiva Purana Devi Bhagavata Purana and Adi Parva of Mahabharata there is an extremely mystical description of this divine sequence of events. These texts tell us how a supremely holy goddess had to endure a harsh curse received in the assembly of Devas and ultimately descended on this earth for the welfare of the entire moving and unmoving world and humanity. The coming of Ganga in the form of a river on earth was not just a punishment or a compulsion of destiny. It was in reality a part of a pre planned divine blueprint to operate the laws of nature smoothly deliver the suffering deities and cleanse the mental and physical sins of human beings.
This pious and exemplary character of Ganga teaches us the invaluable lesson that when a higher consciousness accepts a curse or suffering there is always a collective welfare and cosmic arrangement hidden behind it. Ganga gladly accepted leaving all the grandures and pleasures of heaven to embrace the worldly dust of the earth and the mental impurities of human beings within herself. Every episode of this great saga introduces us deeply to the intense karmic principles of Vedic culture the unalterable laws of destiny and the importance of selfless service. This article uncovers the secrets of that spiritual journey which transformed the Mandakini of heaven into the invaluable lifeline of the earth.
According to the Mahabharata and various Puranas the arrival of Goddess Ganga on earth is linked to the textures of two different curses promises and boons in two distinct periods. The main elements of this supernatural sequence of events and their spiritual messages can be understood clearly through the following table.

|---|---|---|
| First Curse | Immodest behavior of King Mahabhisha and Ganga in the divine assembly of Brahma | Fall caused by losing control even after reaching high positions |
| Second Curse | Harsh punishment of taking birth in human womb given to Ashta Vasus by Maharishi Vashistha | Inevitable result of violating the divine and established laws of nature |
| Duty of Ganga | Becoming the mother of Ashta Vasus to liberate them from the mortal world immediately after birth | Pinnacle of compassion and delivering living beings from worldly bonds |
| Descent on Earth | Severe penance of King Bhagiratha and refuge of Ganga in the matted locks of Lord Shiva | Making the impossible possible through firm determination and unbroken faith |
| Purpose of River Form | Purifying all living beings of earth and providing salvation | Offering one's everything for entire world welfare with a desireless mind |
The story of Goddess Ganga becoming a river on earth begins from the divine and highly disciplined assembly of Brahma. In ancient times an extremely glorious just and religious King Mahabhisha of the Ikshvaku dynasty had attained heaven on the strength of his severe penance sacrifices and merits. He became entitled to get a place in the celestial assembly after his death. One day all the deities yaksas gandharvas and Goddess Ganga herself were present in the service of Brahma. At that very moment a very strong fortunate gust of wind blew there due to which the subtle clothes of Goddess Ganga became slightly disarranged. Following the modesty of the celestial assembly all the deities and sages present there immediately lowered their eyes so that the respect of the goddess remained intact.
But King Mahabhisha could not control his mind. The Kshatriya ego and worldly passion within him awakened and he kept gazing at the form of Goddess Ganga continuously with a lustful vision. The irony was that Ganga also lost control over her mind for a moment on seeing that radiant form of King Mahabhisha and became attracted towards him in her mind. Brahma immediately perceived this immodest inappropriate and passionate mental deviation of both of them with his inner vision. Brahma became extremely angry because this type of low level mental defect was not allowed in the celestial assembly. He rebuked King Mahabhisha and cursed him that he would have to take birth as a human being again on the earth and suffer troubles. Along with this Brahma cursed Ganga also that she would have to go to the human womb become the wife of that king and reside on earth in the form of a river and a woman. Thus a small carelessness in the celestial realm determined the path of Ganga's arrival on earth.
Distressed and agitated by that harsh curse of Brahma when Goddess Ganga was departing towards the earth she met the Ashta Vasus on the way in an extremely sad lusterless and terrified condition. Ashta Vasus are the eight important element deities of heaven who represent various parts and powers of this physical nature. Seeing the faded look of their faces Ganga asked them the cause of their deep worry. Then those Vasus wept and told that an unwitting and inexcusable blunder had been committed by them. Once they were wandering near the holy ashram of Maharishi Vashistha along with their wives. The extremely holy divine and miraculous cow of the sage named Nandini was tied there whose milk could make any human being or creature young and immortal forever.
One of those Vasus named Dyaus stole that divine cow Nandini forcibly along with his remaining brothers due to the stubbornness and insistence of his wife. When Maharishi Vashistha came to know about this theft in the evening through his divine vision he became extremely angry and gave a terrible curse to these eight Vasus to take birth as mortals on earth for the offense of breaking modesty. Human life is considered extremely painful limited and bound by fetters for the deities therefore those eight Vasus were very terrified. They wept and prayed to Goddess Ganga that O Goddess when we take birth in human form on earth please become our mother. As soon as we are born please liberate us immediately from this painful human life and the curse of the sage by immersing us in your holy stream of water. Seeing this extreme suffering of those deities Ganga became extremely compassionate and gladly accepted their prayer.
According to the curse of Brahma King Mahabhisha took birth in the Kuru dynasty on earth as King Shantanu who became the highly glorious king of Hastinapur. One day when King Shantanu was walking alone on the banks of the Ganga he saw an extremely beautiful celestial and divine woman who was in reality Goddess Ganga herself. Shantanu became completely fascinated by her supernatural beauty and radiance and placed a proposal of marriage before her. Ganga recognized Shantanu and accepted this proposal but placed an extremely difficult and strange condition before the marriage. Ganga said that I accept to become your wife but the condition is that whatever I do in life you will never ask any question on any of my actions nor will you ask me the reason for it and nor will you ever check me. The day you ask me any reason criticize me or stop me that very moment I will leave you and disappear forever. King Shantanu accepted this condition without thinking under the influence of love.
After the marriage to take the Kuru dynasty forward Ganga gave birth to seven beautiful and radiant sons one by one. But according to her promise as soon as a beautiful child was born Ganga would immediately lift him in her hands and take him to her fast flowing stream and drown him. After this she would return to the palace looking extremely calm and smiling. King Shantanu used to feel extremely sad helpless and angry from within to see this cruel and inhuman killing of his newborn babies. But due to the fear of breaking his promise and Ganga leaving he would seal his lips and could not speak anything. In reality Ganga was not a cruel mother she was only liberating those seven Vasus immediately after birth from the bonds of the mortal world and the curse of Vashistha.
When Ganga gave birth to the eighth son and she moved forward to immerse him also in the waves of the river like before the patience of King Shantanu gave way completely. He could not tolerate this horror any longer as a father. He stepped forward quickly held the hand of Ganga and said in a voice trembling with extreme anger and grief that what kind of a cruel demonic and heartless mother are you who kills your own innocent and living children in this manner while laughing? I will never allow you to drown this eighth son. As soon as Shantanu said this a serious calm and supernatural smile appeared on the face of Ganga.
Ganga told Shantanu that O King you have broken your promise today by losing your patience and now the time for my stay in this palace has finished completely. After this Ganga explained the old curse of Brahmaloka and the whole secret spiritual saga of the Ashta Vasus to King Shantanu in detail. She told that this eighth child is the same Vasu named Dyaus who had led the main plan of stealing the cow of Maharishi Vashistha. Therefore according to the curse of the sage he will have to spend a long childless glorious and painful life on earth. This child later became famous in the history of Mahabharata by the name of Bhishma Pitamah. Ganga took that child with her to the celestial realm so that he could be given the excellent education of weapons and scriptures from Devaguru Brihaspati and Bhagavan Parashurama.
Many years after this when the amount of sin began to increase on earth King Bhagiratha of the Solar dynasty performed severe penance for thousands of years without food and water to provide peace to the wandering souls of his sixty thousand ancestors the sons of King Sagara and to liberate them from the terrible curse of Sage Kapila. Pleased with this unprecedented penance of Bhagiratha Brahma ordered Ganga to go to earth again with full power. But the speed of Ganga was so fierce and destructive that the entire earth could not bear it and she could go to the netherworld. To avoid this crisis Lord Shiva came forward and held that fierce stream of Ganga in his huge matted locks. After wandering and being disciplined in the locks of Shiva for many years when Ganga flowed on earth she touched the ashes of the ancestors of Bhagiratha and provided them salvation meaning moksha. Thus Goddess Ganga became established on earth forever as a highly holy and life giving river who even in Kaliyuga is washing the sins of human beings and showing them the path of redemption.
Why did Goddess Ganga receive a curse from Brahma?
In the divine assembly of Brahma King Mahabhisha and Goddess Ganga forgot their modesty on seeing each other and a momentary worldly passion was awakened in their minds. Due to this mental deviation Brahma gave a curse to both of them to take birth in the mortal world as a punishment.
Why did Ganga drown her own seven newborn sons in the river stream?
Those seven sons were actually the Ashta Vasus of the celestial realm who were cursed by Maharishi Vashistha to become human beings. The Vasus had prayed to Ganga to immerse them in the river immediately after birth to save them from the long sufferings of human life. Ganga delivered them out of compassion as a mother.
Who was the eighth son of Ganga and King Shantanu and why was he not drowned?
The eighth son was the Vasu named Dyaus who had made the main plan of stealing the divine cow Nandini of Maharishi Vashistha. According to the curse of the sage he had to live a long childless dutiful and disciplined life on earth who was later known as Bhishma Pitamah. He survived because he was stopped by King Shantanu.
Why is Ganga called by the name Bhagirathi on earth?
King Bhagiratha of the Solar dynasty performed severe and continuous penance for the deliverance of his sixty thousand ancestors and for their welfare to bring Goddess Ganga from heaven to earth. Due to these tireless and great efforts of Bhagiratha the name of Ganga became Bhagirathi.
Why does the River Ganga hold the status of 'Patita Pavani' in Sanatana tradition?
Ganga has emerged directly from the feet of Lord Vishnu has resided in the water pot of Brahma and resides in the matted locks of Lord Shiva. Due to being filled with these supreme divine powers liberating the Ashta Vasus and freeing the sons of Sagara she is considered the Patita Pavani river that destroys sins completely and gives salvation.
