The story most closely linked with Krittika Nakshatra is the birth of Lord Kartikeya. In ancient times, there was a fierce demon named Tarakasura, who defeated the gods and took control of heaven. He had received a boon from Brahma that only the son of Shiva could kill him. However, Shiva was deeply absorbed in his meditation, away from worldly affairs. The gods prayed for the union of Shiva and Parvati and when the right moment came, a powerful flame appeared from Shiva's energy. This flame was so intense that no deity could handle it.
Agni, the fire god, was entrusted with this flame but its fierceness made him uneasy. Then, the goddess Ganga, in her kindness, absorbed the energy into her waters. The divine fire settled on a lotus, which was where the six Krittika goddesses, the wives of the Sapta Rishis, came into the picture. They were at the banks of the Ganga when they saw the divine flame on the lotus. Their maternal affection and collective energy transformed this intense flame into a child-Kartikeya, also known as Skanda, Murugan or Subrahmanya.
As Kartikeya grew, he developed immense strength, courage and leadership, much like the fire that nurtured him. Under the guidance and care of the Krittika goddesses, Kartikeya became a great warrior. When the time came, Kartikeya took up arms as the commander of the gods' army and with his fiery strength and the blessings of the Krittika goddesses, he defeated Tarakasura and restored heaven to the gods.
Krittika Nakshatra embodies the essence of fire, purity, sacrifice and valor. The story of Krittika and the nurturing of Kartikeya shows the transformative power of motherhood, the energy of fire and the triumph of righteousness. It signifies that when the purity of fire combines with the nurturing of motherhood and the resolution of dharma (righteousness), even the impossible becomes possible.
