This tale of love, attachment, forgiveness and the birth of Mercury still offers deep lessons for modern relationships

Indian mythology presents not only the power of the gods but also their emotions, vulnerabilities and complex relationships. The story of Tara, Chandra and Brihaspati is a profound tale of attraction, conflict, guilt, forgiveness and awakening. It also explains the origin of planet Mercury and carries deep meaning for spiritual seekers.
Brihaspati, the Guru of the Devas, represented wisdom and Dharma. His wife Tara was admired for her beauty and intelligence. Yet a quiet restlessness lived within her that no one could see.
Chandra was known for his charm, radiance and soothing presence. When Tara and Chandra met, an unspoken attraction arose between them. Tara felt drawn to Chandra and eventually left Brihaspati’s home to be with him.
Brihaspati was deeply hurt and angered. Chandra refused to send Tara back. The conflict intensified and even the Devas and Asuras took sides. Indra and many gods supported Brihaspati, while some powerful beings sided with Chandra. Heaven descended into unrest.
As the dispute grew uncontrollable, Brahma intervened. He asked Tara whom she wished to return to. Tara accepted her mistake and chose to go back to Brihaspati. Brihaspati forgave her, but by then she was pregnant.
Tara gave birth to a radiant child named Budha. Both Brihaspati and Chandra claimed to be his father. Finally, Tara revealed that Budha was the son of Chandra. Brihaspati accepted the truth and blessed the child.
The story teaches that relationships face tests in every era. Instead of anger or jealousy, dialogue and truth bring clarity. After every conflict, a new form of wisdom is born, just as Mercury was.
