A timeless saga of devotion, strength and the victory of love
Across the sacred land of Bharat, many tales of love have taken birth but the saga of Savitri and Satyavan stands in a class of its own. It goes far beyond a tale of affection; this is the account of a woman’s courage, unwavering devotion, selfless surrender and remarkable wisdom. Vat Savitri Vrat is a living reminder of that immortal love. Through faith, penance and her earnest prayer, a devoted wife brings her husband back from the grip of death itself.
Let us journey into this tale - in its depth and emotion.
King Ashwapati of Madra and Queen Malavati shared one deep yearning: they had no child. Years of penance led them to the worship of Goddess Savitri. The goddess was pleased and blessed them with a divine daughter. At the birth of the child, a celestial voice declared: “This girl will carve history through her brilliance, steadfast virtue and love.” She was named Savitri.
When Savitri reached marriageable age, no prince could match her intellect, radiance or grace. The king said, “Daughter, now you must find a worthy life partner yourself. Your decision will hold the weight of ultimate authority.” Savitri set out alone and, deep within a forest, she met Satyavan.
Satyavan was radiant, hardworking, anchored in virtue, devoted to serving his blind father. The moment Savitri saw him, her heart whispered, “This is my life companion.” When she returned and told her father, the royal priest spoke, “Princess, Satyavan’s lifespan is short. He is destined to die within a year.”
Savitri calmly replied, “Once I accept someone as my husband, he remains my husband for eternity. Whether in life or death, my dharma rests with him.”
The wedding took place. Savitri began her life in the forest, serving Satyavan and her in-laws with devotion. Fully aware that death awaited him a year later, she marked each day.
As the fateful day approached, Savitri undertook a three-day fast. Her body became weak but her resolve remained unbroken. On Amavasya - the day of Vat Savitri Vrat - she tied her saree pallu firmly, adorned her forehead with sindoor and joined Satyavan beneath the sacred banyan tree.
While chopping wood, Satyavan became suddenly weak. “Savitri, darkness is closing in before my eyes,” he said, collapsing into her lap. Savitri realized the moment had come. At that instant, a tall, radiant dark figure appeared - Yamaraj. He extracted Satyavan’s soul and began walking south. Silently, Savitri followed. Yamaraj commanded, “Devoted wife, you have come this far but you must return. This is the rule of dharma.” Savitri replied, “Wherever my husband goes, my dharma permits no separation. I seek nothing but to walk by his side.”
Pleased, Yamaraj said, “Ask for any boon but do not ask for Satyavan’s life.” Savitri asked:
Yamaraj halted, remained silent for a moment, then smiled. “Savitri, with wisdom, principle and love, you have conquered death. Satyavan is returned to you.”
Satyavan opened his eyes. Tears welled in Savitri’s eyes but today they were tears of victory, not sorrow. When they returned home, her father-in-law’s sight was restored and the lost kingdom was returned.
This is the abiding message of Vat Savitri Vrat - a tradition woven through devotion, courage and the purest commitment.
