On the day of Amavasya Savitri accompanied Satyavan to the Vat tree which represents stability and long life. While cutting wood Satyavan became exhausted and lost his vision. He collapsed in her lap. Savitri recognized that the foretold moment had arrived.
A strange silence spread across the forest and Yama appeared. He took Satyavan’s life force and walked toward the south. Savitri followed him. Yama asked her to return yet she continued to walk with him because she believed her duty was to remain with her husband.
Yama offered her a boon but instructed her not to ask for Satyavan’s life. She asked that her father in law regain his vision and kingdom. She asked that her father receive a hundred sons. She asked that she herself receive a hundred sons from Satyavan. Yama understood her intention. He realized that her devotion and intelligence had guided her words. He granted Satyavan’s life.
After some time Satyavan regained consciousness. When they reached home his blind father regained his sight and the lost kingdom was returned. This moment is considered a symbol of the grace that arises from devotion righteousness and unbroken faith.
