The History of Astrology - Part 2

The Twelve Zodiac Signs in Astrology

Astrology describes twelve zodiac signs, each with specific strengths, weaknesses, temperament and worldview. These signs are based on twelve lunar constellations (nakshatras) and divided equally into Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Each sign carries a unique symbol representing its characteristics. This article aims to share the history and development of these symbols.

Where Did Zodiac Signs Originate?

The tradition of astrology originated around the second millennium BCE in ancient Mesopotamia. In Babylon, stars and planets were interpreted as signs from the gods. Historical research supports these origins. However, interpreting these signs was an exclusive privilege of specially trained Babylonian priests tasked with predicting the impact of celestial events on kingdoms and kings. Evidence of this is found in the “Enuma Anu Enlil” texts, inscribed on 70 clay tablets containing about 7,000 recorded astrological omens. Babylonians developed a system of 12 zodiac signs, many of which have been incorporated into Western astrology. The practice of naming these signs after constellations and linking them to dates along the solar path was formalized by the ancient Greeks. The 12 Greek names for zodiac signs are: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. The word “Zodiac” itself comes from Greek “zōdiakos kyklos” meaning “circle of animals.”

Who Created the Signs?

While Babylonians structured the zodiac system, the Greeks named the signs and associated them with mythological figures. Greek and Roman scholars further connected signs to personality traits, making astrology more comprehensive. Today, zodiac personality traits are mainly based on this Greco-Roman legacy.

Are Zodiac Signs Real?

Astrology continues worldwide as a cultural tradition and as a tool for self-reflection and spiritual guidance. It is not solely a method to forecast events using planetary positions but also a way for many individuals to understand their tendencies and behavior. Though considered entertainment by some, others rely on astrology for decisions related to marriage, career or health. During difficult times, astrology often provides comfort through a sense of control and hope. Though its scientific validity is debated, astrology undeniably holds extensive social and psychological influence, reflecting humanity’s longtime search for connection between earthly life and the cosmos.

Which Were the Ancient Zodiac Systems?

Historically, there were several zodiac systems:

  • Babylonian Original Signs: Early on, they recognized 17 or 18 signs, later consolidated into the modern 12-sign zodiac.
  • Ophiuchus Controversy: Some astronomers note the Sun also moves through a 13th constellation “Ophiuchus,” which some argue should be included in the zodiac. Still, modern astrology primarily uses 12 signs.
  • Medieval Changes: Astrologers adjusted zodiac dates over time to better align with seasons and the solar cycle. Despite these adjustments, the original concept of assigning personality and destiny based on the Sun’s path remains central to astrology today.

The Unfolding Journey of Zodiac Signs

Zodiac signs embody thousands of years of astronomical, cultural and philosophical thought. They are not merely ancient symbols but living traditions enriching identity, thought and faith even today. Understanding the history of zodiac signs gives deeper insight into astrology as a spiritual and practical path.
