This tale of love, attachment, forgiveness and the birth of Mercury still offers deep lessons for modern relationships
In Hindu Puranas and Vedic texts, the divine powers of the gods are not the only focus. The relationships, emotions and human vulnerabilities of these gods also offer profound lessons. One such mysterious and insightful tale is the one involving Tara, Chandra and Brihaspati, which brings together love, attachment, jealousy, forgiveness and the trials of relationships. This story is not only connected to the origin of the planet Mercury in Vedic astrology but it also imparts a deep message to readers of all ages.
Brihaspati, known as the Guru of the Gods and the protector of Dharma, had a wife named Tara, who was famous for her beauty, intelligence and charm. Tara’s presence captivated everyone in the heavens but within her, there was a deep restlessness that no one could understand.
Chandra (the Moon), known for his coolness, beauty and captivating personality, met Tara in the heavens. An unspoken attraction grew between them. Tara began to feel drawn towards Chandra. Chandra, too, was charmed by Tara's wisdom and beauty. Over time, Tara left Brihaspati’s home and went with Chandra.
Brihaspati was deeply hurt and angry when Tara left him. He tried to bring Tara back but Chandra was unwilling to return her. This dispute escalated to the point where even the gods and demons were divided. Indra, Shani and other gods supported Brihaspati, while some demons and other planets sided with Chandra. This discord created unrest in the heavens.
When the conflict reached its peak, Brahma intervened. He asked Tara whom she wanted to stay with. Tara acknowledged her mistake and decided to return to Brihaspati. Brihaspati forgave Tara but by then, Tara was already pregnant.
Tara gave birth to a beautiful son, who was named Budh (Mercury). However, the dispute didn’t end there, as both Brihaspati and Chandra claimed Budh as their son. Eventually, Tara accepted that Budh was the son of Chandra. Brihaspati accepted this truth and blessed Budh.
This tale is still as relevant today as it ever was, when relationships are put to the test, replace attachment, jealousy and anger with communication, forgiveness and truth. Like Budh, after every entanglement comes a new intelligence, a fresh start and balance. If you found this story engaging and inspiring, share it with your friends and family. It might just guide someone today to resolve the complexities in their life like Tara, Chandra and Brihaspati did.
