Discover how Brihaspati led the gods to victory through Dharma, ethics and inner strength - and blessed Pushya Nakshatra
In the Vedic scriptures and Puranas, Brihaspati is called the "Guru of the Gods," the ocean of knowledge and the protector of Dharma. As the ruler of Pushya Nakshatra, Brihaspati is not only considered an astrological figure but also a guide in every aspect of life. His stories continue to impart teachings on inspiration, ethics and walking the path of Dharma.
Brihaspati is frequently mentioned in the Rigveda, Atharvaveda and the Puranas. He is referred to as "Devaguru" (Guru of the Gods) because he not only taught the gods the rituals and mantras but also showed them the right path during times of distress and difficulty.
In ancient times, there was a constant war between the gods and the demons in the heavenly realms. The demon guru, Shukracharya, had acquired the "Mrit Sanjeevani" knowledge through intense meditation, which allowed him to bring dead demons back to life. Whenever a demon fell in battle, Shukracharya would chant his mantra and the demon would rise again. This made the gods anxious and fearful and their morale began to decline. As a result, the balance of the heavens started to deteriorate.
The gods, led by Indra, convened a meeting. All the gods-Agni, Varuna, Vayu, Surya-were worried. "We almost win but Shukracharya brings the demons back to life with his powers. How long can this continue?" said Indra.
At this moment, they turned to their guru, Brihaspati, who sat calmly with a serious and radiant presence. His face displayed not concern but deep understanding and patience.
The gods appealed to Brihaspati, "O Guru, please show us the way. Our strength is waning and the demons keep returning." With a smile, Brihaspati said: "True strength does not lie in weapons or miracles but in truth, Dharma and inner strength. Until you recognize your inner power, victory will remain impossible." He taught the gods that true victory comes not from external means but from self-purification, adherence to ethics and following Dharma. Brihaspati instructed them on the correct pronunciation of mantras, the purity of rituals and the adherence to Dharma. He explained that only when the gods practiced purity in their actions, clarity in their thoughts and trust in their hearts would they attain lasting victory over the demons.
Brihaspati made the gods perform a special Yajna (ritual). He reminded each deity of their duties-Agni to perform tapas, Varuna to practice restraint, Vayu to maintain movement, Surya to radiate light. Each god performed their role and, following Brihaspati's guidance, offered the Yajna with utmost devotion. During the Yajna, Brihaspati recited the mantra: "Om Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah" (He who protects Dharma, protects himself.) The energy from the Yajna filled the gods with renewed confidence and strength. They became stronger, not just externally but also internally.
When the battle took place, the gods not only relied on weapons but also on morality, restraint and Dharma. Despite the demons returning to life, the gods' inner strength, patience and trust led them to victory. Shukracharya's powers were no longer effective, as the gods' actions had become pure and sacred. Brihaspati taught the gods that the true guru is one who teaches the disciple the value of inner strength and Dharma, rather than just relying on external tools. This is why Brihaspati is known as "Devaguru" (Guru of the Gods) and Pushya Nakshatra is called "Amrit Nakshatra."
Brihaspati, as the ruler of Pushya Nakshatra, naturally attracts those born under it to knowledge, ethics, Dharma and self-purification. People born under this Nakshatra lead lives full of inspiration and guidance, becoming guiding lights for others.
This tale of Brihaspati not only demonstrates the depth of the Vedic scriptures but also holds relevance in modern life. For those born under Pushya Nakshatra, this story is a reminder that no matter how many challenges arise, with the right guidance, inner strength and adherence to Dharma, every difficulty can be overcome.
