This tale of the lotus and Pushya Nakshatra conveys a message of beauty, purity and self-awareness even in adversity
In Indian culture, the lotus flower is not only a symbol of beauty but also of purity blossoming amidst adversity and spiritual awakening. The Pushya Nakshatra is closely associated with this symbol as it teaches that even amidst life’s challenges, one can bloom like a lotus with knowledge, service and love.
Once upon a time, in the primordial stage of creation, the entire universe was submerged in water. Lord Vishnu was resting in his yogic sleep (yoganidra). From his navel, a beautiful lotus flower emerged. On this lotus, Brahma, the creator of the universe, appeared. Brahma, upon seeing his own creation, became proud, thinking that he was the creator of the universe. However, out of curiosity, he wanted to know the foundation of his existence.
Brahma descended through the stem of the lotus to find its origin but, after traveling for countless years, he could not find its end. Finally, exhausted, Brahma returned and relinquished his pride. The deeper meaning of this tale is that true beauty and power lie in humility, curiosity and self-knowledge. The lotus blooms in the mud but never carries any dirt on its petals. It maintains its purity and beauty.
Another famous tale involving the lotus is from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). During this event, one of the fourteen treasures that emerged was the lotus on which Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity and fortune, was seated. Lakshmi’s association with the lotus further strengthened its symbolism of purity, prosperity and new beginnings.
Symbol | Essence of the Story | Life Message |
---|---|---|
Lotus Flower | Emerged from Vishnu’s navel, Brahma’s birth and Lakshmi in Samudra Manthan | Maintain purity and beauty even in struggles |
Pushya Nakshatra | Service, knowledge and love even in adversity | Be an inspiration and ideal in society |
This story and its symbols teach us that no matter the circumstances in life, if we have the purity of a lotus, the service-oriented nature of Pushya and wisdom, we can achieve beauty and success even in the deepest mud. If you found this story inspiring, share it with your friends and family, because everyone will face moments of adversity but like the lotus, blooming is within everyone’s reach.
