A powerful story reflecting the guru-disciple tradition, humility and the spiritual grace of Pushya Nakshatra
In Indian culture, the Guru-Disciple tradition holds the highest importance. One such inspiring and profound tale is that of Guru Brihaspati and Shani. This story not only emphasizes the significance of education and humility but also highlights the selflessness and spiritual energy of Pushya Nakshatra. Let us delve into this story and understand how it continues to guide us in life today.
Shani, the god of karma, discipline and justice, was always in search of knowledge from an early age. He understood that true knowledge could only be gained through penance, practice and under the guidance of a great guru. Shani decided to seek education from Brihaspati, the Guru of the gods.
However, Shani knew that his shadow and influence scared many people. Therefore, he disguised himself in human form and entered Brihaspati's ashram under the name ‘Sauri.’
In the Gurukul, Sauri (Shani) showed extraordinary humility, discipline and dedication to his studies. He was the most hardworking, honest and inquisitive among all the disciples. Brihaspati was impressed by Sauri’s devotion and humility but he did not know that his disciple was actually Shani.
Sauri learned deeply about the Vedas, scriptures, astrology, ethics, dharma and yoga. He always respected his guru, served him and followed every command. His selflessness and humility won everyone’s heart at the Gurukul.
After completing his education, Brihaspati asked all his disciples for their guru dakshina. Sauri humbly asked, “Guru, what can I give you as dakshina?”
Brihaspati replied, “Your dedication and service are the greatest dakshina for me but according to tradition, I must ask for something in return.”
At that moment, Sauri revealed his true form and said, “Guru, I am Shani. I have taken human form to learn from you because, without your knowledge, my work remained incomplete.”
Upon hearing this, Brihaspati became emotional. He embraced Shani and said, “O Shani, the selflessness, humility and devotion with which you have received this knowledge are the true dakshina. I do not seek any dakshina from you. Your life itself is my blessing.”
The story of Guru Brihaspati and Shani is not just a mythological tale but it is highly relevant to our lives today. It teaches us that through education, service and humility, one can achieve true heights in life. If you found this story inspiring, share it with your friends and family because the more we spread knowledge and selflessness, the more beautiful and successful our lives become.
